French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian condemned China’s “system of institutionalized repression” against Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang before the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday, AFP reported today from Geneva. Le Drian said, “From the Xinjiang region of China, we have received testimonies and supporting documents that show China’s unjustified practices against the Uighurs and a massive system of institutionalized surveillance and repression.”

French Foreign Minister Le Drian made the criticism during a video conference at the U.N. Commission on Human Rights.

On Monday, China hailed the socio-economic development of Xinjiang and Tibet as “shining examples” of China’s human rights progress.

The French foreign minister also criticized the authorities of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for continuing to wage war against his people “with the help of his allies.

Le Drian also criticized the Russian authorities for using a military nerve agent manufactured in that country “in an attempt to poison the Russian opposition Alexei Navalny incident. Le Drian l stressed that “after escaping death, Alexei Navalny is now in prison.”
