GOP Sen. Mitt Romney said Tuesday (Feb. 23) that he believes former President Donald Trump would be the Republican presidential nominee for a third Time if he runs for president again in 2024.
“I think he’ll win the nomination, if he runs. I mean, a lot can happen between now and 2024, and I’m not very good at predicting that.” Romney said in an online discussion Tuesday.
“I don’t really know what’s going to happen then. But I look at the polls and the polls show that among the names of potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump among the Republicans, he (will) win by a landslide.”
Romney said that even though Trump has left office from Jan. 20, “he still has by far the loudest voice and a lot of influence in my party.”
“I anticipate that he will continue in that role. I don’t know if he’s going to run in 2024. But if he does, I’m quite certain that he will win the nomination.” Romney said.
Romney, a consistent anti-Trump lawmaker in the Republican Party, is the only Republican lawmaker to have voted guilty in both impeachment trials against Trump. He has said he would never vote for Trump.
“I haven’t voted for him in the past. I would probably have supported someone who I thought, better represented my niche faction of the Republican Party.” Romney added.
Romney’s rare statement Tuesday drew the attention of Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller, who commented on Twitter, “Even Romney gets this.”
In interviews with three media outlets last week, Trump declined to say whether he would run for president again, saying it was “too early”.
“But I see a lot of big polls out there (in favor of me), there’s no question about it,” Trump told Newsmax. We have a tremendous amount of support, and I’m not going to say (whether to run) yet, but we have a huge amount of support, and I’m seeing the poll numbers soar,” Trump told Newsmax. I’m the only one who’s been impeached and (voter support) numbers are going to go up.”
Fox News senior correspondent John Roberts tweeted Wednesday that sources said Trump would not announce a 2024 run during his speech at the Conservative Convention (CPAC) this Sunday, but that he would be “enthusiastic” about the idea – -Trump will be a vocal critic of current President Joe Biden‘s policies to date in his Sunday afternoon speech.
