Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a statement of appeal to a regulatory board funded by Facebook to reinstate his blocked account on the platform. It is expected to take about two and a half months for the regulatory board to make a decision on the matter.
Former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt is co-chair of the oversight committee. He told Britain’s Channel 4 News that they are investigating Trump’s appeal over the blocking of his accounts on Facebook and Instagram. The committee, made up of 19 former politicians, journalists and academics, is an independent organization that hears complaints from users.
Tonin Schmidt said, “This is a very high-profile case, but that’s exactly why this oversight committee was created in the first place.” The committee also confirmed that “the oversight committee has received a user statement regarding issues with President Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram.” They added, “We will not comment further on this statement until that committee has made its decision.”
Tonin-Schmidt said the board has 90 days to make a decision. He added that while members want to speed up the process, a Time frame is necessary to allow translators and experts to share their opinions. The board is also reviewing public comments on this appeal from Trump. They have received “thousands” of public comments.
Trump revealed last week that he is considering options for returning to social media, including joining an existing platform or creating his own. However, he has ruled out the possibility of rejoining Twitter.
The U.S. Congress is seeking to hold large technology companies accountable for their actions and has been seeking to enact new anti-trust laws. Last Thursday (Feb. 18), the House Energy and Commerce Committee (House Energy and Commerce Committee) announced a hearing for March 25. Attendees include Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who are expected to testify about misinformation on the online platform.
