tesla CEO Elon Musk says his new Roadster project will use rocket technology.
Musk talked about all of this Thursday in a conversation with Joe Rogan, host of the podcast Joe Rogan Experience, where the Tesla CEO discussed the Roadster, the next generation of high-end electric roadster.
“I want to make it fly, and I’ve been working on how to make something like that hover without killing people,” Musk said. He often makes grandiose futuristic promises, but always fails to keep them.
“We’re trying to make it hover, but not very high. Maybe it can hover a meter above the ground, or a similar height, and if it falls, it will explode, but passengers won’t be killed.”
Musk explained that the company will finish engineering the Roadster this year and will begin shipping it in 2022, echoing a tweet he posted late last month.
Musk added: “We’ll be adding some rocket technology to the convertible flyer.”

This isn’t the first Time Musk has talked about adding rocket technology to the Roadster. In 2018, he tweeted that a version of the car would come with a SpaceX kit containing “a set of thrusters” with “10 small propellant rockets.”
Talking to Rogan, Musk explained that the standard roadster has two small rear seats, while the premium roadster comes with a SpaceX package that includes “a set of thrusters,” not two rear seats.
At least, I’m sure we can use the rocket to run from the rear and it will give you three times the thrust,” he added, explaining that this will come to fruition.
Musk predicted in 2016 that by 2017, Tesla would have the ability to conduct “a full self-driving test from Los Angeles to New York.
Tesla has a “full autopilot” mode, but the company noted that it requires “a very attentive driver, with his hands on the wheel and ready to result in it.
