President Joe Biden announced Friday (Feb. 19) a $4 billion commitment to a global initiative to support the distribution of a Chinese Communist virus vaccine to poor countries.

Biden joined world leaders at the Munich Security Conference for the first Time since becoming president. At the conference, he announced financial support for the Coalition for a New Crown Vaccine Access (COVAX). The coalition’s mission is to distribute vaccines to low- and middle-income countries.

Speaking at the network meeting, Biden said, “The re-emergence of Ebola in Africa just as we struggle to emerge from this pandemic is a stark reminder that we must work simultaneously to finally fund health security, strengthen global health systems, and build early warning systems to prevent, detect and respond to future biological threats as they continue to strike. coming.”

Biden pledged $2 billion to fund the “CCP Virus Vaccine Access Mechanism” program through the end of 2022. The commitment comes two months after Congress appropriated the first $2 billion in funding, which should be released this month.

“The CAVM program is jointly operated by the World Health Organization, the United Nations’ specialized agency for international public health. Former President Trump has accused the WHO of covering up the Communist Party’s failure to respond to the public health crisis at the outset and subsequently withdrew the United States from the WHO.

“We must work together to strengthen and reform the WHO,” Biden said. “We need a UN system that is focused on biological threats and that can trigger action quickly.”

Biden used the funding commitment to encourage G-7 partners to implement national pledges to the Vaccine Access Facility program and to invest more money in international vaccine development and distribution.
