U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., made his comments Wednesday (Feb. 17) amid a war of words between Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and former President Trump. He said Trump is the most influential person in America of any political figure.
“I still believe that President Trump is the most influential political figure on either side.” The African-American senator told Fox News on Wednesday.
He explained that the media either loves President Trump or hates him, and in either case, has given him a lot of coverage. The fact is, what we need is a unified message from the Republican Party. “President Trump’s policy positions have brought about the lowest unemployment rates for African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans and women in 70 years.”
Scott did not weigh in on McConnell, instead arguing that Trump’s policies are what matter.
“What we need are more of President Trump’s policies that focus on an inclusive economy, that focus on funding for HBCUs (traditional African-American colleges), that focus on the lowest tax rates that we’ve seen in a generation, that have led to the fastest job and wage growth at the bottom and faster than at the top, because President Trump’s policy positions have really changed the American economy. ” Scott said.
“That’s the key to the future. Do we want a private sector driven by economic mobility and opportunity, or do we want a private sector controlled by socialism and Washington, D.C.?”
Trump issued a scathing statement Tuesday night (Feb. 16) denouncing McConnell’s leadership and arguing that Republicans will not regain the Senate majority under McConnell’s leadership. McConnell said on Feb. 13 that Trump bore “practical and moral” responsibility for the Jan. 6 Capitol siege. McConnell also left open the possibility that even if Trump is acquitted by the Senate, he could face civil or criminal charges.
“There is no question,” McConnell said at the Time, “that the people who broke into this building at the time believed they were acting in accordance with the wishes and instructions of President (Trump).”
In a statement released Tuesday night, Trump said Democrats and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) played McConnell like a fiddle – they’ve never been more comfortable – and they want to keep it that way! And they want to keep it that way! We know that our America First agenda is the winner, not McConnell’s Beltway First agenda or Biden‘s “America on the back burner. The “America First” agenda is the winner, not McConnell’s Beltway First agenda or Biden’s America After America agenda.
McConnell is far less popular than Trump. A series of recent polls among Republican voters show that Trump is currently the most popular figure in the Republican Party. Another poll went further, showing that a significant number of Republicans would consider joining the party led by Trump.
“If Trump were to split from the Republican Party and create his own party, polls show he would likely create the second largest party in the country, knocking the Republican Party into third place.” Dritan Nesho, CEO and chief pollster of HarrisX, told Hill.TV earlier this week.
GOP Sen. Ron Johnson said Monday (Feb. 15) that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “scathing” comments about former President Trump do not represent the views of most Republican senators.
Trump has announced that he will support Senate candidates who support his agenda. Previously, McConnell threatened that he would not support a pro-Trump candidate that he did not consider credible.
