South Korea has arrested an unidentified person who was found this morning (16) in the area of a checkpoint in the eastern military restricted area of Gangwon Province by the South Korean military. The preliminary investigation is that he is a man in his 20s from North Korea, who has expressed his willingness to defect to South Korea.

South Korea’s United Press Agency reported that the South Korean Joint Staff Headquarters said the man was caught on camera moving south in the restricted area at around 4:20 a.m. today. The highest level “Jindo dog level 1” order was issued immediately, and combat troops were deployed to search for the man, who was found at around 7:20 a.m.

Jindo Dog Alert is a defense against possible local provocations by North Korea and is normally maintained at Level 3, but is raised to Level 2 when there is a possible invasion by North Korean forces, and to Level 1 when signs of an enemy invasion are actually detected.

The Joint Staff Headquarters said it is conducting a joint investigation with relevant departments into the man’s reasons for crossing the border to the south and his process, willingness to submit, etc. It is not ruled out that the man arrived in Korea by sea, and the military is checking the coastal alert status.
