New round of arrests by Myanmar military Five people, including Aung San Suu Kyi’s cronies, detained

Following the arrest and house arrest of Myanmar’s substantive leader Aung San Suu Kyi last week, the Myanmar military raided the headquarters of Aung San’s political party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), on Wednesday night, and detained five people, including Kyaw Tint Swe, a close associate of Aung San.

“The National League for Democracy (NLD) posted via Facebook that night: “The military dictator raided and destroyed the NLD headquarters at around 9:30 p.m.” Two of the party’s elected lawmakers also said that Burmese police raided the NLD’s headquarters in Yangon tonight, with more than 10 police officers forcing their way in.

“KyiToe, a member of the NLD’s information committee, said Kyaw Tint Swe and four other people were taken from their homes. Kyaw Tint Swe was the head of the State Counselor’s Office under Aung San Suu Kyi.

On Feb. 1, the Burmese military launched arrests of several senior members of the ruling party, including Myanmar’s substantive leader and senior state minister Aung San Suu Kyi. Subsequently, nationwide demonstrations and protests erupted in Myanmar, entering their fifth day as of February 10.
