The truth about the Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill is being blatantly distorted, Fox TV host Tucker Carlson said Wednesday (Feb. 3) on his “Tucker Carlson Tonight” show. Powerful people are falsifying history, and the American people will suffer the consequences.
The following is a translation of the transcript of the program.
On November 22, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald murdered the President of the United States. There are many questions about this murder, but no one has ever asked who Lee Harvey Oswald really was.
A passionate and committed Communist, Oswald gave up his U.S. passport and defected to the Soviet Union in 1959. There, he married a Russian woman and lived in Minsk. Three years later, he returned to the United States and immediately began attending rallies in support of Castro in Cuba. in the fall of 1963, Oswald traveled to Mexico City to meet with KGB agents who were there. A few months before this, he had attempted to murder General Edwin Walker in Dallas after Walker gave a speech attacking communism.
Oswald never hid his political positions, even for a fraction of a second. He harped on communism to anyone who would listen. However, many Americans never really understood Oswald’s ideas because the news media did not tell them. Instead, the media almost immediately began to tell a very different story. They believed that President Kennedy had been murdered by conservatives, probably by conservatism itself, which they often referred to as “hate.
The explanation is never very precise, but the story is always the same: the right wing killed John F. Kennedy. Naturally, the Soviet Union was happy with this claim. As Soviet spokesmen put it, the moral responsibility for Kennedy’s assassination coincided with “Barry Goldwater and other right-wing extremists. In the end, the coordinated lies paid off. A year later, Goldwater lost a historic general election defeat to Democrat Lyndon Johnson. At the Time, many voters associated Goldwater with the murders.
For decades, the media repeated this lie. On the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, The New Yorker magazine still blames Kennedy’s assassination on anti-Communism when, in fact, JFK was murdered by an avowed Communist. Just because it sounds ridiculous doesn’t mean they won’t tell the truth. By now, it is likely that most Americans believe this to be the truth. Why don’t they believe it? That’s because that’s what they’ve been told.
History has become a political tool, not just a record of what happened. History is a way to shape the future. History has been used to hurt some people and to help others gain power. History is never neutral. We are seeing our own history being tampered with right before our eyes. Check out the following quote, which was said by historian Michael Beschloss on MSNBC on Tuesday night (Feb. 2).
Beschloss said, “This was a terrorist attack on Congress by a U.S. president who instigated a rebellion …… We remember 9/11. We are mindful of the fact that there were attacks that succeeded and one that almost did, which was an attempt to crash a plane into the Capitol and kill numerous members of Congress. That almost happened. And this terrorist attack did happen.”
As Beschloss has repeatedly stressed over the past 24 hours, we must “never forget.” Beschloss is indeed a historian, just as some people think a 7-11 is a restaurant, but he peddles what is called popular history, that is, history that is only reported in newspapers and cable news. But for those of us who used to live before the age of the Internet, these media are biased.
For Americans under 30, history was written exclusively on social media, the playground of true demagogues. In the realm of technology platforms, people don’t even consider reality. What actually happens at a given time and in a given place is completely irrelevant. It is the ideology that is crucial. Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is certainly a master at playing with this medium. Here’s the January 6 incident as she described it to the nation’s children on Instagram.
AOC says: I rushed into the bathroom, closed the door and then kept hearing thump, thump …… All of a sudden I opened the door and heard someone trying to get inside and into my office …… I just heard, “Where is she? Where is she? This is the moment I thought it was all over.” We’ve shown videos like this before, and we’ve made fun of them, but they’re not actually funny. People will believe this crap, and some of them already do. Anyone who was at the Capitol that day knew it was ridiculous. no rioters showed up in the hallways of the AOC offices at all. Trump voters did not try to kill her. The rioters were more angry at Mitch McConnell (R-KY) than any Democrat.
In a way, what you saw on Jan. 6 was an intra-party fight, a mindless act of vandalism against Republican leaders, born of chronic frustration. The people who manipulate the Republican Party don’t care about the people who elected them. That’s been true for a long time, but Republican voters finally saw it clearly. on Jan. 6, they exploded. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) may be in greater danger than AOC or Ilhan Omar. They shouted poor Pence’s name. But he didn’t do anything, but they were angry at him. That’s not a defense of the riots, or even an ideological point of view. That’s the truth, that’s what actually happened.
But facts don’t matter now, what matters is who writes the history of what happened and who defines what the facts are. There’s a reason why Democrats started describing the riots as a racial attack within a few hours. If you look at it first, and understand what happened, you will sound confused. As bad as it was, what happened that day had nothing to do with race. The idea that it had anything to do with race is a ridiculous fantasy and lie. But no one refuted the lie, so they just kept repeating it. Now, a few weeks later, it’s the accepted version of what happened. Powerful members of the House talk about it as if it were true, as if it had been proven by some objective investigation.
Why would they claim, in the words of Adam Schiff, that it was some kind of “nationalist uprising”? You know the answer, everyone knows the answer, although almost everyone is too timid to say it out loud. By saying that, they can lump you in with the people who broke into the Capitol and punish you for a crime you didn’t commit and never supported.
If what happened on Jan. 6 was a riot, then we can arrest the rioters and punish them, which is what we should do. If what happens on January 6 is a riot, a failed revolution, an attempted coup, that’s a different matter altogether. Then we would have needed to take military action, to wage a new war against our own people. Not surprisingly, that’s exactly what they expect.
Robert Grenier, a former CIA official, told NPR on Tuesday (Feb. 2), “Even in the seemingly high crisis after 9/11, the numbers of al Qaeda in Afghanistan are really small. The purpose of our operation is to go after al Qaeda members, but primarily to eliminate the support environment that they rely on, and that means fighting the Taliban. I think that’s the core issue that we need to deal with here, which is going after those criminals.”
In a formerly peaceful republic like ours, no one in Washington seems to find this type of talk alarming. Senator McConnell recently sent out a tweet from the Senate that slammed Putin for some of his shoddy work. Russia remains the real threat. But the threat McConnell doesn’t mention, and almost never does, is his own constituents. Those voters are now being reclassified as al-Qaeda terrorists and treated accordingly.
The Washington Examiner, which describes itself as right-of-center, published an article Monday (Feb. 1) by former CIA official Kevin Carroll that said, “We saw five people die in the attempted coup on Jan. 6.” However, Carroll does not explain who exactly those five people were or how exactly they died. It would be very nice to know that. But the facts are not the point. The point is that this was an attempted coup, and the U.S. government needs to act accordingly.
We defeated Al Qaeda and can do the same with the fascist thugs who attacked our democracy last month,” Carroll concluded. But only if we take similarly hard measures against the enemy within.”
Treating Americans like al Qaeda, the enemy within. Clearly, this is the position of the neoconservatives in response to the Jan. 6 riots. Why isn’t it the position of everyone in this country? Because that’s them writing history, and we’re letting them do it. But we need to be prepared for the consequences of that history.
