A judge ordered Wednesday that “QAnon Shaman,” the bull horned man who broke into the Capitol on Jan. 6, will receive an organic meal in a Washington, D.C., detention facility after refusing to eat the standard prison diet for nine days because of his religious beliefs.
His attorney, Al Watkins, told a court hearing Wednesday afternoon that the shaman, whose real name is Jacob Chansley, was transferred to a D.C. jail run by the city’s Department of Corrections to await trial for his role in the Jan. 6 riots, but refused to eat the prison meals.
Chansley, who was also arrested in his Home state of Arizona in January, also refused to eat while in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was given organic meals.
At Wednesday’s hearing, Watkins argued that because Chansley is now in the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, the federal prison’s policy of providing organic meals to Chansley, as ordered by an Arizona federal judge, should not be denied.
An attorney for the Bureau of Corrections argued that they found no clear indication that shamanism mandates organic meals, adding that providing organic Food would be a logistical nightmare in prison.
Judge Royce Lamberth agreed that Chansley was entitled to a special prison meal because of his religious beliefs.
