Zhejiang Linhai Market Supervision Bureau recently busted a counterfeit cosmetics group, seizing more than 100,000 pieces of counterfeit “Qiongman”, “Haoman” and “Wu Yujie” series of “Netflix face creams”, involving a total of 30 million yuan (about 36 million Hong Kong dollars); the police found that the cosmetics were filled in an abandoned public toilet, and after testing, it was confirmed that the mercury (commonly known as mercury) exceeded the limit by more than 7,000 times. The cosmetics in question are still available online on the mainland, priced at about 50 yuan (about HK$60) per bottle and labeled “available for pregnant women”. The Zhejiang authorities are currently liaising with the Guangzhou and Harbin police to clear up the source of production and sales.
According to internal media reports, a woman in Linhai, Zhejiang Province, reported to the municipal supervision bureau at the end of August last year that the use of this type of “Netflix face cream” appeared red, swollen, peeling and other adverse reactions, the authorities then sent the product to the test, found that it not only did not obtain special cosmetic approval number, and the mercury content exceeded the limit of more than 7,000 times.
The cosmetics company is headed by a couple surnamed Wu and Tian. The couple became multimillionaires from a small business because of the production and sale of “Netflix creams”. Their relationship broke up afterwards due to the intervention of a third party, but they maintained close cooperation after the divorce for the sake of high profits.
The police also found that the raw materials for the cosmetics in question were bought by the couple from Harbin businessman “Tang” at a price of RMB 2,000 for a barrel of 20 kilograms; according to estimates, more than 700,000 bottles of such cosmetics have been produced and sold since 2014, involving a total of RMB 30 million. The police raided the production site in Chongqing on Nov. 15 last year and found that the cosmetics were filled in an abandoned public toilet, which was covered with dirt and flies and emitted a foul smell.
The Red Star News reporter found that “Qiongman” beauty cream and “Qiongman” beauty serum are still available online on the mainland, with the former measuring 35 grams and selling for 48.9 yuan per bottle and the latter measuring 55 ml and selling for 49.9 yuan per bottle. Both in the product description did not appear in the name of the manufacturer, and marked “available for pregnant women”.
Linhai City Market Supervision Bureau said that the mercury content of the cosmetics in the case seriously exceeded the standard, the use of such cosmetics can indeed achieve whitening effect in a short period of Time, but long-term use can cause dermatitis, pigmentation or even induce skin cancer, and can also lead to liver and kidney damage, seriously endangering consumer health. When used by pregnant women, mercury can also affect the growth of the fetus through the placental barrier.
