Florida shooting, FBI agents 2 dead, 3 wounded, suspect dead

Two FBI agents were killed and three FBI agents were wounded in a shootout with a suspect in Sunrise, Florida, and the suspect is dead, the FBI said in a statement Tuesday (Feb. 2).

FBI Miami Special Agent Michael D. Leverock and spokesman Jim Marshall said in a statement that the shooting occurred around 6 a.m. local Time Tuesday morning as a group of law enforcement officers executed a federal court-issued search warrant in an incident that was part of a violent crimes against children case .

Two wounded FBI agents were taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the third was injured in an unknown condition. The statement said the subject of the warrant was dead.

The FBI said it is investigating the shooting.

The FBI statement said, “The review process is thorough and objective, and will proceed as quickly as possible under the circumstances.”

Video from CNN affiliate WSVN shows an ambulance driving from the scene to the Broward County coroner’s office at about 10:30 a.m. local time, escorted by a group of law enforcement officers on motorcycles. Once there, an American flag-covered body was wheeled into the building as a group of officers saluted.

The shooting occurred at 6:04 a.m. at the Water Terrace apartment complex in Sunrise, said Otishia Browning-Smith, a spokeswoman for the Sunrise Police Department.

The apartment complex where the shooting occurred is known to be an upscale gated community with a fitness center, pool, spa and tennis courts. Sunrise is located approximately 10 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale, South Florida, and has an approximate population of 84,000 as of the 2010 census.
