Indian media reported Monday that India’s electronics and information technology department issued a new notice making the ban on the ShakeYin App and 58 other Chinese apps permanent.
According to the media, when the ban was first imposed last June, the Indian government gave the 59 apps, which include ByteDance’s ShakeYin, Tencent’s messaging software WeChat and Alibaba’s UC Browser, a chance to explain their stance on complying with privacy and security requirements, a series of questions they were asked to respond to.
However, Indian media, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the government issued an updated notice last week that “the government is not satisfied with the companies’ responses/explanations, so the ban on these 59 apps now becomes permanent.
According to the Indian department when it issued the ban in June, the apps “undermine the sovereignty and unity of India, national defense, security and public order.
India called the order a “digital strike” following clashes between Chinese Communist troops and Indian soldiers at the dispute-ridden Himalayan border, when 20 soldiers were killed.
India also banned 118 other action apps last September, including Tencent’s popular video game PUBG, adding to the pressure on Chinese tech companies.
