January 23rd marks the one-year anniversary of the closure of Wuhan following the outbreak of the New Coronavirus in China. The Epidemic, which first originated in Wuhan, China, has sickened 94 million people worldwide and killed 2 million over the past year, causing tremendous damage and threat to human society, and the epidemic has still not abated significantly. We would like to point out here that those who are really responsible for the catastrophe caused by this epidemic have not been held accountable so far. And those who blew the whistle a year ago have been virtually forgotten. This is a great mockery of history and a disrespect to the victims of the epidemic, including those who died. On this first anniversary of Wuhan’s closure, I believe that human society needs historical memory and needs to learn from it. And today, the best historical memory is to hold accountable those who were really responsible for the spread of the epidemic a year ago. And that real person responsible is the Chinese government, the leader of the Chinese government, Xi Jinping. That is the real history, the historical truth.
However, what we should all reflect on is: the first anniversary of the closure of Wuhan, do we still remember how much the inhumane and violent closure of the city cost the people of Wuhan. And now, have the people of Wuhan been compensated for the cost? How many people still talk about the popular “Fang Fang Diary” back then? Are we still concerned: where are the people who documented the truth about the epidemic as citizens, Chen Qiushi, Fang Bin, etc.? Do we still miss Dr. Li Wenliang and remember the fact that he was warned by the government for blowing the whistle? We should also ask what exactly did Zhang Zhan report to get a heavy sentence of four years? We all know that the Chinese government has never been in the habit of covering up history, however, are we, as a nation, going to gradually forget the history of a year ago as well?
At the same Time, we should all be alert to the fact that the Chinese Communist authorities are now not only covering up history, but are already rewriting the historical narrative and distorting history with impunity. Today, when you walk into the so-called Memorial Hall for the Fight against the Epidemic in Wuhan, the most prominent image that greets you is not the portrait of Dr. Li Wenliang, but actually the portrait of Xi Jinping. The authorities are deceiving the people by propagating that it was Xi Jinping’s “wise leadership” that led China to quickly contain the epidemic, while completely avoiding the fact that Xi Jinping, who supposedly “personally commanded and deployed” the epidemic, knew about its seriousness as early as December 2019, but ordered the concealment of the truth from the whole society and the world for close to a month. The Chinese government has yet to give the outside world a convincing explanation as to why there was a mysterious explosion near the Wuhan virus research laboratory after the outbreak. Why did the Chinese government allow experts from the World health Organization to investigate Wuhan only a year after the outbreak was supposedly under control last summer? And why were millions of pages of relevant research information removed from the Internet by the authorities before the experts arrived? What is the Chinese Communist Party and its government hiding?
What is most absurd is still the rewriting of history by the Chinese Communist authorities. Today, the whole world seems to be praising China’s epidemic prevention achievements, but forgetting that the government that made this achievement was the one responsible for the epidemic, and that the CCP authorities have arranged for writers to spread the message on Weibo that “the epidemic did not originate in Wuhan”, and that the person most responsible has become the hero to be glorified. According to the official tone of the Chinese Communist Party, instead of China giving the world an explanation, the world now owes China an apology. You know, in just one year, history has been rewritten in such a way that it is not only the responsibility of the CCP propaganda, but also of us ordinary people who tend to fade into the past.
Global epidemics like the New Coronavirus are likely to occur again in the future, and human society must be mentally prepared to face waves of challenges from the virus. Setting the record straight and holding those who cover up the truth accountable is the best preparation we can do. Therefore, on this first anniversary of the closure of Wuhan, we cannot give up on holding people accountable, which is the best way to commemorate the first anniversary of the closure.
