The coronavirus outbreak has not yet subsided. How will the Tokyo Olympics, which were moved last year due to the outbreak, be held this summer? Behind closed doors? Virtual? Tokyo organizers and the Olympic Committee’s “brainchild” is being tested. Amid rumors of secret cancellations, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he wanted to make the Tokyo Olympics “a symbol of humanity’s victory over the coronavirus.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday, Jan. 22, reaffirmed his intention to host the Tokyo Olympics this summer, despite reports that The Japanese government had secretly abandoned the idea.
Kan told parliament today that he is determined to hold a “safe” Olympics in Tokyo as a symbol of “humanity’s victory over the new coronavirus.
The Tokyo-2020 Organizing Committee also said in a statement that it was “fully focused” on preparing for this summer’s Tokyo Games (July 23-August 8), along with the Japanese government and the city of Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
According to the British newspaper The Times on Thursday, citing sources within Japan’s ruling coalition, the Japanese government has secretly said it cannot host this year’s Summer Olympics due to the resurgence of the coronavirus around the world, including in Japan. To save face, the newspaper said, the Japanese government will try to ensure that Tokyo hosts the 2032 Olympics after Paris-2024 and Los Angeles-2028.
Japanese government deputy spokesman Mamoru Sakai said there was “no truth” in the Times article, while in Sydney, Australian Olympic Committee boss Matt Carroll called the information about the cancellation of the Tokyo Games “baseless rumors.
But Toshiro Muto, chairman of Tokyo-2020, told AFP on Tuesday that “hosting the Olympics is our constant direction,” but he did not rule out the possibility that the Tokyo Olympics games would be held behind closed doors or that the number of spectators would be limited.
