The European Parliament voted on Wednesday (January 20) to adopt two resolutions expressing concern over tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The resolutions, which are the European Parliament’s overall policy recommendations for the annual implementation reports of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), mention that the EU is seriously concerned about the tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the recent military provocations against Taiwan by mainland China.
Both resolutions also call on the EU and its member states to support Taiwan’s participation as an observer in the World health Organization, the World Health Assembly and other international organizations and activities.
The resolutions also call on the EU and its member states to revisit their engagement policy with Taiwan and to work with international partners to help maintain Taiwan’s democracy free from foreign threats.
In addition, the resolution recognizes Taiwan’s efforts to combat the new crown Epidemic and commends Taiwan for donating more than 7 million masks to several EU member states.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its gratitude to the European Parliament for adopting the resolution with concern for the situation in Taiwan.
In a statement, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The European Parliament adopted six Friendship Resolutions in plenary session last (2020) and followed up with two more Friendship Resolutions earlier this year, demonstrating its firm support for Taiwan with concrete actions, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sincerely welcomes and thanks.”
The statement added that Taiwan, as an important member of the Indo-Pacific region, will continue to deepen active cooperation with the European Union and other like-minded partners, firmly defend the values of democracy and freedom, and jointly promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.
