Kyoto Medical University: Tea can inactivate viruses in saliva

Japan’s Kyoto Prefectural Medical University research found that green tea, black tea and oolong tea compounds, can make the saliva of Wuhan pneumonia virus (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) inactive, especially black tea effect is the best, the study has been published in the pre-print site “BioRxiv”.

Comprehensive foreign media reports, scientists observed that black tea, green tea and oolong tea in the catechins encounter the new coronavirus, will lead to a reduction in the titration concentration (titer) of the virus, and eventually fell below the detectable range; in a variety of tea extracts, black tea showed the highest effect, in addition, these teas contain substances that can highly reduce the activity of the virus, preventing it from damaging human cells.

Researchers will be a variety of tea into the saliva samples of diagnosed people to obtain the above results, found that tea can make the saliva of the new coronavirus inactive; other studies in the past has also proved that tea contains substances with anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-microbial effects, but researchers also warned that drinking a few cups of tea can not treat Wuhan pneumonia, tea in the substances can not adequately from the intestine into the bloodstream, there is no way to reach the dose in the blood sufficient to destroy the virus.

However, Japan’s Kyoto Prefectural Medical University team believes that drinking tea and ingesting the substances, can reduce the possibility of oral and gastrointestinal tract from Wuhan pneumonia virus.
