Comprehensive foreign media reports, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer “Serum Institute of India” is located in Maharashtra (Maharastra) Pune (Pune) campus, a fire this afternoon. According to images taken by local media in India, a large amount of smoke can be seen coming from a building in the campus. After the incident, the firefighting units immediately arrived at the scene to control the fire, five people are known to have been killed, the Institute’s Executive Director Adar Poonawalla said on Twitter, “We are deeply saddened and send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.”
It is worth noting that the Serum Institute of India is currently manufacturing the Oxford vaccine, with a claimed monthly production capacity of 50 million doses. Sources said that the building in question is about 1 kilometer away from the vaccine production plant, the vaccine production and storage work was not affected. The local fire department said that five fire engines were dispatched to the scene after the incident, and the fire was at the site of a factory under construction.
The “Serum Institute of India” told Reuters last week that after obtaining the production license for the “Oxford vaccine”, the WHO is expected to give the vaccine an early authorization for emergency use, and for the WHO-led “COVID-19 (COVAX) led by WHO to provide vaccines for equitable distribution around the world. In addition, the Serum Institute of India is also preparing to launch production of Novavax Pharmaceuticals’ Vulgaris vaccine in the United States.
