Recently, some netizens have reported that both Tencent QQ and QQ Office TIM have been found to be scanning users’ Chrome and other browser histories, as well as searching and selectively uploading shopping records.

On January 18, IT Home, a subsidiary of Qingdao Soft Media, reported that on January 15, on the V2EX forum, netizen “mengyx” reported that Tencent QQ had tried to read users’ browsing records through the interception records of an anti-virus software on the mainland. The screenshots from the logs show that Tencent QQ is trying to access the “History” directory in the user directory of Microsoft’s Edge browser, which stores information about users’ browsing history using the browser.

According to the post, 10 minutes after logging in to QQ, Tencent started scanning all the folders under “Appdata\Local\” and further scanned “User Data\Default\History” in it.

IT Home” pointed out that “User Data\Default\History” is based on the default history storage location of the “Chrome/Chromium” browser.

Netizen “mengyx” also broke the news that Tencent QQ and QQ Office version TIM have been reading users’ browsing history for at least a year and a half.

After the news got out, another netizen, “qwqdanchun”, went and grabbed the access behavior of Tencent QQ files and made a simple analysis, sending out a posting “Clarification on QQ Reading Chrome History”.

The posting pointed out that Tencent QQ does not only target Chrome and Chromium browsers, but also reads the history records of all browsers.

The company also said that Tencent QQ not only reads browsing records, but also selectively uploads search and shopping records.

When this news came out, some netizens were outraged: “User privacy is bullshit in China! Everyone is running around naked, it’s not just QQ that’s spying on us!

Another netizen said, “What’s all the fuss about? All the so-called big data technology that domestic Internet companies are so proud of is just stealing personal privacy, isn’t it? If you’re serious, you can’t get away with any of it. The majority of the domestic rogue software, all like this, nothing new, the top simply do not care.

The company’s anti-virus software, Flint security labs, said that Tencent QQ and QQ Office version of TIM will get the history of Chrome, IE and other Chromium kernel browser users, and after reading it, will classify the messages and compare the search links in the history.

Tencent QQ officially admits that it does read browser history, but claims it is used to determine users’ login security risks.

The Apple Daily reports that Fan Jianwen, vice president of privacy and network security at the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, said that in a big data environment, software companies may use user data for advertising and promotion purposes, which cannot be successfully blocked by anti-virus software; the best way is to use another computer or cell phone with less personal data to handle mainland business when installing mainland software.
