Mark Halperin, host of the day’s “Newsmax,” reported that Mitch McConnell and establishment Republicans do not want to see Trump in the presidential election in 2024, and that McConnell’s latest move in the Senate may be to not only convict President Trump, but to impeach Trump and bar him from holding public office again because establishment Republicans do not want to see Trump run again, which is the inside story of McConnell’s push for impeachment as a Republican.
The guests on Newsmax believe that unless Trump declares that he will not run again, as long as Trump runs, he will be ahead and will have more support in the Republican Party than any other contender. None of the current candidates in the Republican Party are likely to receive double-digit support, and Trump remains the favorite to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2024.
If McConnell is hell-bent on passing impeachment, McConnell will face a very difficult situation within his party if he can’t get the 17 Republican senators needed to convict Trump, the Newsmax guest said. Even if he could get impeachment through the Senate, there would be a lot of people in the Republican Party who would suggest that it was McConnell who took our candidate away, and that would create a lot of shock in the Republican Party.
According to the New York Times, convicting President Trump would require 50 votes from the Democratic Senate and at least 17 votes from Republican senators, and a conviction would allow the Senate to vote again for the president’s impeachment.
