On Dec. 27, 2020, Norwegian citizen Svein Andersen, 67, became the first person in the country to be vaccinated against the Chinese communist virus.
Norwegian officials said Monday (Jan. 18) that the number of elderly patients who have died after receiving the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in the country has risen to more than two dozen, and that health care agencies are investigating the deaths and further researching whether adverse reactions from the vaccine will lead to death in frail patients.
Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA), said in a statement that reports of adverse reactions leading to fatal outcomes suggest that “common mRNA vaccine adverse reactions, such as fever and nausea, may lead to fatal outcomes in some frail patients. “
Camilla Stoltenberg, director of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, told CBS News that in the 13 cases analyzed so far, the patients were all older, frail and severely ill, and all of these patients died from their original illnesses after vaccination. She said, “In Norway, on average, about 45 people die in nursing homes every day, so this does not represent any excess mortality or that they are vaccine-related.”
The Norwegian Medicines Agency said Monday that all deaths that occur within days of vaccination will be investigated. In a statement, the agency wrote, “We cannot exclude adverse vaccine reactions (e.g., fever and nausea) that occur within the first few days after vaccination, which could lead to an exacerbation or fatal outcome in patients with serious illnesses.”
A spokesperson for the agency told the Wall Street Journal, “We are now reiterating our existing recommendation not to administer the vaccine to terminally ill patients.” The spokesperson sought to allay concerns about the safety of the vaccine and spoke of how there is currently no evidence that vaccination is an unsafe practice.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency changed its vaccination guidelines for the CCA virus (neocoronavirus) on January 14, 2021, warning that people who are “very weak” should not be vaccinated. “If you are very weak, you probably shouldn’t get the vaccine,” Steinar Madsen, the agency’s medical director, told the media last week.
As of Jan. 14, more than 42,000 people in Norway had been vaccinated against the Chinese communist virus. Norwegian authorities have reported that 23 elderly vaccinees with serious illnesses have died after receiving the vaccine.
Pfizer and BioNTech said Monday that they have worked with the Norwegian Medicines Agency to gather all relevant information since the deaths occurred. Pfizer said, “Our immediate thoughts are with the families of the victims.”
As of Jan. 18, deaths after vaccination have been reported in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland. Another report showed 55 deaths in the U.S. after vaccinations.
