In an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal, White House economic advisor John Kudlow called on the incoming Biden administration to initiate a free trade agreement consultation with Taiwan, demonstrating his support for Taiwan’s position against Chinese Communist pressure. He also advocated that the U.S. should demonstrate an attitude of defending Taiwan, which would also win worldwide support.
Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Council, listed the major achievements of the Trump presidency, including tax cuts, deregulation and trade agreements. I think President Trump will go down in history as the president who changed our policy and woke everyone up to the fact that China is evolving from a competitor to an enemy,” he said.
He called on the Biden administration to continue its hard line, including negotiating a free trade agreement with Taiwan. He said that with the first phase of the U.S.-China agreement already settled, an agreement with Taiwan could express U.S. support for Taiwan against pressure from Beijing. It’s important for the United States to defend Taiwan and to make it clear to the Chinese Communist Party that we intend to defend Taiwan,” he said. I think the world will support us.
Kudlow also urged Biden to continue to impose tariffs on $37 billion in Chinese imports “at least until the U.S. government is satisfied that China has implemented the trade agreement.
In the 80-minute interview, surprisingly, Kudlow slammed Trump for his mishandling of violence in the U.S. Congress and was also disappointed with the way Trump treated Vice President Mike Pence.
I had expected him to immediately come out with a statement urging everyone to exercise self-control and stop the violence,” he said. He said Trump should not repeatedly assert that he won the election and that “as soon as the Electoral College declared Biden elected, we should acknowledge the results and move on to discuss our positive accomplishments and the policies that led to those policy accomplishments.
Asked if he was frustrated by Trump’s criticism of Pence, Kudlow replied, “I’m disappointed in the president.
He said, “The vice president’s legal experts made it very clear that Biden was cognizant that his utility in confirming the electorate results in Congress was extremely limited, with almost only the exception of the extremists, and that the entire legal profession here is aligned with Pence.
