Joe Biden is gearing up to take over the presidency on Jan. 20, and has been working feverishly to lay out his staff. It has been revealed that some of his team members with longstanding ties to the Chinese Communist Party have been given important assignments. Among them are Thomas Zimmerman, special assistant to the president for personnel, and Kurt Campbell, who is in charge of China.
The National Pulse revealed on December 12 that Zimmerman was a visiting scholar at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences while serving as a senior fellow at New York University’s Center for International Affairs.
The FBI determined that the organization had close ties to the Chinese Communist Party’s top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security, and that the Communist Party often used the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences to conceal its identity and used its employees to recruit spies overseas.
In 2019, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences contacted retired CIA officer Kevin Mallory through LinkedIn, a social networking service, and Mallory began selling classified U.S. Department of Defense documents to the Chinese Communist Party until he was caught and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Zimmerman was a “visiting scholar” at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, where he focused on “Afghanistan, Somalia and Chinese regional policy.
He has also hosted an academic salon at the Shanghai Institute for American Studies (SIAS) with Li Lifan, a Chinese Communist Party advisor and foreign affairs assistant to the director of the Institute of International Studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, on topics related to counterterrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan, security issues in Central Asia, U.S. views on the Belt and Road, and security issues in South Asia.
According to a June 15, 2015 “Academic Brief” prepared by the SIAS Research Office, the salon was held on June 4 of that year.
In addition, the Biden team announced on June 14 that former State Department Assistant Secretary for Asia-Pacific Kurt Campbell will serve as the White House NSC “Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific.
This is a new position for Biden’s team, previously widely known in the media as “Asia tsar” (Asia tsar). The incumbent will handle relations with China, and his immediate supervisor, prospective national security adviser Jake Sullivan, is therefore quite important.
Campbell, however, also has close ties with the Chinese Communist Party.
In July 2020, Campbell was invited to Beijing to attend a meeting of U.S. and Chinese think tanks in the face of the threat of a rampant new coronavirus, where Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended and spoke. At the meeting, Campbell advised the Chinese Communist Party that, first, Biden would win 100% of the election, and second, the Chinese Communist Party should not get tough with Trump for the time being, but start with the easiest aspect and keep communicating with the US.
Twitter user @LTViews said Campbell is the architect of Obama’s “Back to Asia” strategy; he has been doing business in China for the past few years, and was invited to visit China last July and give advice to the CCP; his son studied in Beijing. The @LT Vision concludes, “Almost all of Obama’s diplomatic team is ‘in bed’ with the CCP.
