Responding to the paperless era of smartphones, social media and the rise of digital photos, Costco announced on Wednesday, Feb. 13, that photofinishing centers in existing stores will close for good on Feb. 14, 2021.
In a recent email to customers, Costco said that the photo centers in more than 500 Costco stores across the U.S. will close starting Feb. 14.
The email said that since the introduction of photo-enabled cell phones and social media, demand for printed photos has fallen dramatically and demand for printed materials has continued to decline, despite the continued growth in the number of photos taken.
After careful consideration, Costco has decided that it will no longer offer on-site photo printing services and will continue to offer photo printing, photo books, stationery and calendars on the Costco website.
The email noted that the home video transfer, passport photo, photo restoration and cartridge refill services that were part of the original physical service will also no longer be offered.
Many people learned of this news and felt very sorry for them. Some people said, in the past, everyone in COSTCO flushing, suddenly closed indeed feel a pity.
Ms. Wang from Orange County said, since the home office, the printer ink at home has increased greatly, COSTCO photo processing center cartridge refill service, for them to save a lot of money to buy cartridges, the future closed, will certainly increase a lot of expenses.
It is reported that pharmacies, including Wal-Mart, Target, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid, continue to provide physical printing services.
It is estimated that thanks to the popularity of cell phone photos, 1.4 trillion photos were taken worldwide as of 2020, and photo sharing software like Instagram has 1 billion active users per month. All of this has made photo sharing a breeze and has also significantly impacted the photo developing industry.
