A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi early Friday (Jan. 15), killing at least 34 people and injuring more than 600. Thousands of residents fled in panic.
The epicenter of the quake was 6 kilometers northeast of Majene, at a depth of 10 kilometers. At least 34 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the powerful earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi early Friday, according to the latest news from the Thai newspaper Bangkok Post. It also caused a hospital to be flattened and other buildings to be severely damaged.
Earlier, information from Indonesia’s National Disaster Response Agency showed that four people died and 637 others were injured in Majene city, while three people were killed and 24 injured in the nearby Mamuju regency.
The earthquake caused the collapse and destruction of many buildings, and the National Disaster Response Agency pointed out that the earthquake hit after 1:00 a.m. local time on the 15th, causing damage to at least 60 homes and causing thousands of panicked residents to flee their homes overnight in search of a safe place to take refuge. The earthquake was felt strongly for about 7 seconds, but did not trigger a tsunami warning.

According to AFP, a hospital was flattened and more than a dozen patients and staff were trapped in the rubble. “The hospital was flattened, the whole thing collapsed,” said Arianto, a member of the Mamoudju County rescue agency.
Social media footage showed residents fleeing to higher ground on motorcycles and a child trapped in the rubble as others tried to remove the debris with their bare hands.
Indonesian search and rescue agencies confirmed that at least one hotel had collapsed.
According to Reuters, a local journalist in Mamoudju district said some buildings were badly damaged, including two hotels, the governor’s office and a shopping mall. Bridges were damaged and at least one road to Mamoudju County was disrupted.
The same area was hit by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake yesterday, causing damage to several houses. Indonesia’s National Disaster Response Agency noted that a series of earthquakes over the past 24 hours had triggered at least three landslides and disrupted power supplies.
