House Republican Conference Chairman Liz Cheney supports impeachment of Trump, called for removal by several lawmakers

U.S. media outlet Breitbart News reported that House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-CA) issued a statement in support of impeaching President Trump earlier Tuesday (Jan. 12), the same day she encountered calls for his removal from office from fellow Republican members of Congress.

“There could be no greater betrayal of the presidency and constitutional oath than Trump,” Liz Cheney said in a statement Tuesday, announcing her support for his impeachment. The statement quickly drew condemnation from House conservatives, with House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-Mich.) and Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Okla.) issuing a statement the same day saying, “When Rep. Cheney came out in support of impeachment today, she did not consult with the Republican Conference and failed to follow the rules of the Republican Conference and ignored the preferences of Republican voters.”

“At this critical time, Cheney has weakened the Republican Conference for personal political gain, she is no longer fit to lead the House Republican Conference, and she must resign as conference chair.”

House conservatives went on the offensive against Cheney, a third-rate Republican lawmaker, at a conference last July, with the support of Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Donald Trump Jr. This year, the call to remove Cheney from office reached a boiling point among conservatives on Jan. 12.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Okla.), co-founder of the Freedom Caucus, is one of Trump’s main allies in the House and has repeatedly lashed out at Cheney when she opposes Trump. Cheney’s attacks on Trump have focused on Trump’s response to the Wuhan virus outbreak, Trump’s Twitter account and Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, attacking Trump on those fronts, and Rep. Jordan, from Ohio, argued that Cheney’s attacks on President Trump have not done the Republican Party any good at all. Rep. Biggs said Cheney’s attacks on President Trump undermine President Trump’s ability to take back the House.

Cheney also tweeted out a photo of Dick Cheney, Bush Jr.’s vice president, wearing a mask, paired with the text, Dick Cheney said to wear a mask. The phrase, word for word, is the same one used by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to attack President Trump last year.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Va.) said last July that Cheney should step down as chairman of the House Republican Conference. Rep. Gaetz wrote, “Liz Cheney has been attacking President Trump and his agenda behind the scenes (and now publicly). House Republicans deserve a good conference chair,” and ” Liz Cheney should step down or be removed from office.”
