U.S. Counterintelligence Chief: Chinese Communist Party to Change Tactics, Continue Stealing Secrets

In an interview with the Washington Post on Tuesday, William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to steal secrets from the United States will not slow down in the future. In an interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday, William Evanina said the Chinese Communist Party’s stealing of secrets from the United States will not slow down in the future, but will only change its methods.

In a crackdown on Chinese espionage and technology theft, the U.S. closed the Chinese Consulate in Houston last year and expelled more than 1,000 Chinese military researchers. However, the U.S. national counterintelligence chief believes that the Chinese Communist Party’s theft of secrets continues.

William Evanina, director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said, “What we’re seeing now is that the Chinese Communist Party is not only obfuscating, but will change its tactics and techniques in the future so that it can continue to steal secrets, but in a different mode. I don’t think the CCP will slow down its legal and illegal theft of technology and money from the United States.”

According to Ivanina, the Chinese Communist Party and Russia remain the top threats to the United States. They are also trying to interfere with the current U.S. CCP virus vaccine supply chain.

William Evanina, director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center: “Our enemies are trying to interfere with that supply chain.”

Evanina also offered advice to the new U.S. administration on how to address the threat.

William Evanina, director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center: “First and foremost, geopolitical factors, figuring out why the Chinese Communist Party, Russia, and Iran are doing what they’re doing, how counterintelligence relates to big data theft, how counterintelligence relates to the supply chain, and how to effectively protect our critical infrastructure.”

In response to the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill rampage, Ivanina said a full and lengthy investigation will be needed to hold both law enforcement insiders and the perpetrators of the rampage accountable, and he is more concerned about foreign adversaries taking advantage of the domestic unrest in the United States.

William Evanina, director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center: “Are they taking advantage of the conversations that we’re having about big technology companies and social media?
