The “King of Beer” Li Dahong died, family sues 301 Hospital for malpractice claims

Before he fell into a coma, Li Dahong exclaimed, “I’ve been duped”.

Li Dahong, the founder of Jinlongquan Beer, known as the “Beer King” in Jingmen, Hubei Province, died on January 9, 2021, at the age of 69 in Hainan Hospital of Beijing 301 Hospital.

According to Li’s family, he underwent surgery at Hainan Boao Super Hospital last year for a right-sided auditory neuroma, and later developed complications that led to brain death; the family sued the hospital for medical malpractice, claiming 21 million yuan, but was not accepted by the hospital.

On January 11, a staff member of Boao Super Hospital also responded that the hospital was aware of the news of Li Dahong’s death and expressed deep condolences for it.

Li Dahong had exclaimed before his death “duped”

Li Dahong began to lose his hearing in early 2020, and was later diagnosed by the hospital as having an auditory neuroma in his right ear. In August last year, he went to a well-known hospital in Beijing for treatment, and after being advised by a professor at the hospital surnamed Han, he was transferred to Hainan’s Boao Super Hospital in September for tumor removal and cochlear implant surgery. After the operation, doctors once said it was very successful, but Li Dahong developed an intracranial hematoma and high pressure and fell into a coma after a headache and vomiting, at which point the hospital immediately pushed him into the operating room for resuscitation, but with little effect.

On September 18, 2020, Li Dahong was in a deep coma, the hospital transferred him to another 301 Hainan Hospital for treatment, but Li Dahong has been in a coma, and needs a ventilator to maintain life, to November 10, the hospital declared Li Dahong brain dead.

According to the report, Li Dahong’s last words when he was awake were “I’ve been fooled again, cheated!” The family also raised a number of questions afterwards, such as the apparently different handwriting of the same doctor’s signature on the medical records, and the labeling of Li Dahong as a “child” and “congenital deafness” that did not match the facts.

Why choose Boao Super Hospital?

After the news of Li Dahong’s brain death, some people questioned, “Why should such a famous entrepreneur travel to Hainan to do this surgery?”

It is reported that before his surgery, Li Dahong’s chief surgeon had recommended that he take surgery to remove the tumor and then have a cochlear implant in his right ear to ensure subsequent hearing recovery. The cochlear implant that Li Dahong chose was an imported licensed medical device that could do 3.0T MRI, and according to the official policy of the Chinese Communist Party, this product can only be performed at the Boao Super Hospital in Hainan as an overseas licensed medical device, so Li Dahong decided to go to the Boao Super Hospital for the surgery.

According to the description of Boao Super Hospital, Boao Super Hospital is a state-controlled general hospital, which has a special drug room for drugs that have not yet been approved in China but are available abroad, and has introduced a team of 18 academicians to the hospital, which basically covers 18 medical departments.

As early as February 2013, China’s State Council formally approved the establishment of the Boao Le Cheng International Medical Tourism Early Zone in Hainan and allowed the zone to implement nine special policies on an early and pilot basis, including accelerating the approval of medical device and drug import registrations, appropriately reducing import tariffs for some medical devices and drugs, and allowing the declaration of stem cell clinical research, as well as importing new medical services such as the nine-valent cervical cancer vaccine (HPV) injections to prevent cervical cancer.

According to Qixinbao, Boao Super Hospital is jointly owned by Hainan Boao Le Cheng International Medical Tourism Investment Company Limited and Hainan Chengmei International Pension and Rehabilitation Center Co.
