Ukrainian Individuals and Entities Sanctioned by U.S. for Allegedly Influencing U.S. Elections

The U.S. Department of State and the Treasury Department issued separate sanctions on Monday (Jan. 11) against a number of Ukrainian individuals and entities. The individuals and entities are accused of conducting disinformation campaigns in favor of Russia and interfering in the 2020 U.S. election.

The State Department released a statement Monday saying that today the United States imposed sanctions on seven individuals and four entities that are part of a network of foreign influence linked to Russia. The network is linked to Andrii Derkach.

On September 10, 2020, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Derkach, who is a member of the Ukrainian Parliament. The Treasury Department stated that Derkach launched a disinformation campaign in favor of Russia in an attempt to influence the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The State Department said in a statement Monday that Djelkache has been an active Russian operative for more than a decade, maintaining close ties with Russian intelligence.

The individuals placed on the sanctions list Monday include former Ukrainian government officials Konstantin Kulyk, Oleksandr Onyshchenko, Andriy Telizhenko and current Ukrainian lawmaker Alexander Dubinsky ( Oleksandr Dubinsky). They are accused of coordinating the dissemination and promotion of fraudulent or unsubstantiated allegations involving U.S. political candidates.

The State Department also said that NabuLeaks, Era-Media, Only News and Skeptik TOV are Ukrainian media front companies that disseminated false statements at the behest of Djerkach and his associates.

The U.S. government will freeze any U.S. assets of the blacklisted individuals and entities and generally prohibit Americans from doing business with them.
