The Wall Street Journal quoted sources as saying that Stripe, a digital payment system, has suspended online financial services for the Trump campaign’s website. The move means the Trump campaign website and online fundraising platform will no longer have a mechanism to process online donations from supporters, effectively cutting off the Trump campaign’s online donation pipeline. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign did not comment on the report.
San Francisco-based Stripe handles millions of online credit card transactions for online sellers and e-commerce platform clients, and the Trump campaign’s website and several pro-Trump online fundraising organizations are all Stripe clients.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the 10th that people familiar with the matter pointed out that Stripe has stopped providing services for Trump-related camps, for the reason that the Trump camp has violated Stripe’s rules against advocating violence.
After Election Day, the Trump campaign expanded its fundraising efforts with supporters to prepare money for a massive lawsuit to overturn the election results. According to media reports, the Trump camp successfully raised more than $200 million in donations for the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee between Nov. 3 and Dec. 3, 2020.
Shopify, a multi-channel commerce platform, and PayPal, an online transaction payment platform, have each taken action after the Capitol was overrun by pro-Trump supporters on the 6th.
Paypal last week has closed a number of pro-Trump organizations to organize the 6th Washington rally online account, Shopify last week also removed the Trump campaign and Trump’s personal brand online store.
