Kim Jong-un elected general secretary of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, Kim Yo-jung not included in Politburo

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was elected as the general secretary of the Workers’ Party at the eighth national congress of the party. The news source said his sister, Kim Yo-jung, was not selected as a candidate for the Politburo and was not included in the list of ministers of the Workers’ Party.

The Yonhap News Agency cited a report by North Korean official media KCNA on 11 November, saying that Kim Jong-un was elected as the general secretary of the Workers’ Party at the eighth congress of the North Korean Workers’ Party on 10 October, but Kim Yo-jung, Kim Jong-un’s sister and former first vice minister of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party, was not elected as a candidate for the Politburo, nor was she included in the list of ministers of the Workers’ Party.

The report pointed out that Cho Yong-won, who is considered to be a close friend of Kim Jong-un, was elected as a standing member of the Politburo. Including him, the standing committee is currently composed of five people, including Kim Jong-un, Choi Yong-hae, Lee Byung-chul and Kim Deok-sun, and Cho Yong-won was also appointed as the secretary of the Party Central Committee and a member of the Party Central Military Commission.

As for Park Bong Joo, the vice chairman of the Party Central Committee who was a standing member of the Politburo, he was removed from all party positions. First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Sun-hee was demoted from a member of the Party Central Committee to an alternate member, while Foreign Minister Lee Sun-kwon maintained his position as an alternate member of the Politburo.
