The U.S. Trump administration maintains a tough stance against the Chinese Communist regime ahead of its upcoming departure from office. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday announced the lifting of self-imposed restrictions on U.S. relations with Taiwan, and on the same day issued a joint statement with the foreign ministers of three allied nations expressing grave concern about the mass arrests of pan-democrats by Hong Kong authorities.
White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien
On Sunday, White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien issued a statement saying that the U.S. is considering further action in response to Beijing and Hong Kong authorities’ indiscriminate use of national security laws to arrest pro-democracy activists and the Chinese Communist Party’s continued concealment of the origins of the Communist virus. Below is the full text of O’Brien’s statement.
In May 2020, the Trump administration foresaw and declared that the freedom and openness of Hong Kong society would die at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. Last week, the authorities’ political arrest of more than 50 people, including former elected officials, was the latest move by Beijing to put many nails in the coffin of democracy in Hong Kong, for doing nothing more than exercising the political power granted to them by the Basic Law.
Also in May, the Trump administration demanded that Beijing answer questions about the origins of the virus and accused the World health Organization of pushing the issue onto the Chinese Communist Party allowing it to continue its cover-up. Just as it ignored its own international obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, the CCP continues to fail to live up to international health rules.
The United States is the first major power to have the courage and determination to speak frankly about the true nature of the Chinese Communist regime. It is critical that all nations of the world hold Beijing accountable. The world cannot continue to pay a heavy price for Beijing’s irresponsible and harmful behavior, whether it is its termination of the rule of law in Hong Kong or its failure to cooperate with international health officials on the Communist virus pandemic, by being naive and even complicit. The United States is considering further action in response.
