On the night of January 6, 2021, Israel launched a large number of fighter jets to launch air strikes on the Damascus area of Syria. Since Israel did not borrow from Lebanon as usual this time, but broke in from the Golan Heights, which is under Israel’s own control, it was caught off guard and Iran’s missile forces deployed in the Damascus area suffered heavy losses.
Israel and Iran’s Battle in Syria
As the top rivals in the Middle East, Israel and Iran have long been at odds with each other, with Israel repeatedly declaring its intention to launch pre-emptive strikes against Iran, and in response to Israel, Iran has deployed a large number of short-range ballistic missiles in the Damascus area of Syria.
This is because, although Iran can produce and manufacture medium-range ballistic missiles with longer ranges, it is constrained by the distance from Israel and can only cover the Israeli mainland when deployed in the northwest of the Iranian mainland, in which case Iran’s medium-range ballistic missiles are easily intercepted by Israeli air defense systems.
Therefore, after signing an agreement with Syria, Iran deployed its own short-range ballistic missiles in the Damascus area.
In the face of Iran’s forward deployment, Israel continuously conducted air strikes against Iranian missile forces deployed in Damascus, especially Iran’s radar positions, ammunition depots, missile depots, and command headquarters, etc. Iran suffered heavy casualties under Israeli air strikes due to the lack of effective air defense means.
The air defense systems purchased from Russia are not very useful
Since Israel is equipped with a large number of advanced U.S.-aided fighter jets, especially the F-35 stealth fighter jets, which have a strong combat capability, and Iran’s own fighter jets are very backward, it relies mainly on the air defense missiles purchased from Russia to protect its own forces, but it is difficult to passively rely on air defense missiles to resist Israeli air strikes, not to mention that most of these air defense systems are already behind the times.
