Biden: Will crack down on National Rifle Association after inauguration

President-elect Joe Biden promised Friday (Jan. 8) to “defeat the National Rifle Association” (NRA) after being sworn in.

Biden’s pledge was a response to a tweet he made to former U.S. Rep. Gabby Gifford (R-Ga.), who was shot at an event in 2011. Gifford had been shot at an event in 2011. Gifford said the attack did not break her.

Biden responded, “Your resilience and immeasurable courage continue to inspire me and millions of others. I pledge to continue to work with you – and with survivors, families and advocates across the country – to defeat the NRA and end our widespread gun violence.”

The NRA, which has more than 5 million members, seeks to protect the right to bear arms held by citizens, based on the Constitution’s Second Amendment.

The association did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Biden’s remarks. Its lobbying arm recently published an article saying that Biden’s inauguration would “begin a coordinated attack on the rights of America’s gun owners.

“We must be prepared for an attack.” The NRA wrote that if officials get their way, the Biden administration “will implement measures such as banning and confiscating the most common rifles in America and will arbitrarily limit the number of guns that can be purchased each month.”

Biden’s website says he has a plan to end “our prevalence of gun violence” and claims he has fought and won twice against the NRA, referring to his help in passing the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993 and passing a 10-year ban on certain weapons.

“As president, Joe Biden will defeat the NRA again,” Biden’s website states.

Some of the proposals include banning the manufacture and sale of so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, limiting the number of guns that can be purchased to one per person per month, and banning the possession of guns by people convicted of hate crimes.
