The total number of deaths from Coronavirus Infection 2019 (COVID-19) in Belgium exceeded 20,000 today, with more than half of those deaths coming from nursing homes, Ministry of health officials said.
Belgium has a population of 11.5 million. The National Institute of Health (Sciensano) said that since the outbreak, a total of 662,694 people have been diagnosed and 20,38 have not been treated.
According to AFP, Belgium counts all deaths among those who test positive for coronavirus, making it one of the countries with the highest mortality rate from the infection in the world.
Belgium began vaccination on Jan. 5.
Authorities said the number of deaths from the disease in nursing homes came to 10,270 on Dec. 18 last year. Amnesty International last month accused authorities of “abandoning” nursing homes.
During the first wave of the pandemic, Belgium’s National Institute of Health reported that more than 250 people died each day, with a record 322 deaths in a single day on April 8.
Deaths from the epidemic improved over the summer, but began to rise again in October, with the number of deaths reaching 218 on Nov. 10. The average number of deaths reported last week was 58 per day, and the number of confirmed cases was about 1,780.
