It never rains but it pours: A male employee of Pinduoduo committed suicide by jumping from a building in his hometown in Hunan province while on vacation

Earlier, a 23-year-old employee of Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo died on his way home after working into the wee hours. Pinduoduo said afterwards, “Look at the people at the bottom of the ladder, who doesn’t trade their lives for money?”, which drew fierce criticism.

Pinduoduo reported on Saturday night that a male employee had committed suicide by jumping from a building in his home in Changsha, Hunan province.

Pinduoduo’s parent company, Shanghai Xunmeng Information Technology Co., Ltd., issued a notice on January 9, citing the death of an employee surnamed Tan, according to international media.

Pinduoduo said it received the news on Saturday afternoon. The employee, surnamed Tan, asked his supervisor for leave on the morning of Jan 8, but did not say why. Penduoduo also quoted Tan’s father as saying that after picking Tan up on the afternoon of January 8, Tan jumped from the 27th floor of his home in Changsha and died on the spot at around 12 noon on January 9. A forensic examination confirmed his suicide.

Pinduoduo said Tan, who was employed in July last year and was unmarried, was deeply saddened by his death and was awaiting the final results of an investigation by local authorities into the cause of the accident. During this period, the company will fully cooperate with the aftermath of Tan Mou Lin’s death. Pinduoduo also said the company will immediately open psychological and special emergency counseling channels on its Intranet system, and arrange dedicated staff to provide counseling services for employees.
