A flight lost in Indonesia is a Boeing 737 carrying at least 62 people

The flight was lost less than four minutes after takeoff in Jakarta.

On January 9, local time, a commercial flight of the Indonesian airline Sriwijaya with the flight number SJ182 was lost and crashed for unknown reasons. Reports mentioned that the flight was scheduled to fly from Jakarta, Indonesia to Kundian.

According to the flight tracking App @flightradar24, flight SJ182, operated by a 26-year-old 737-500, was lost less than four minutes after takeoff from Jakarta. flightradar24 data shows that the flight dropped more than 10,000 feet in less than a minute before it was lost.

Search and rescue teams have now gone to the crash site, and local media quoted the captain of the Indonesian Ministry of Transport’s coastal patrol boat as saying the airliner had crashed.

According to Indonesia’s MetroTV, the plane was carrying 62 people, though another local media outlet reported that it was carrying more than 50 passengers.

It was not immediately clear why the plane was lost.

Boeing said it is monitoring the situation in Jakarta and gathering more information.

It’s worth pointing out that Boeing just this week agreed to pay more than $2.5 billion to settle a criminal investigation with the U.S. Department of Justice over the 737 MAX.

On Oct. 29, 2018, a Lion Air Indonesia Boeing 737 crashed after takeoff, killing 189 people on board. That crash was followed five months later by the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane of the same type, killing all 157 people on board.

The two fatal crashes called into question the safety of this type of airliner. Subsequently, regulators around the world have ordered the suspension of Boeing 737Max.
