A 43-year-old woman in Guangxi, who had been menopausal for several months, managed to conceive and give birth successfully under such circumstances because she kept the “seeds from ten years ago”; the medical staff of Guangxi Reproductive Hospital was recently encouraged by the good news during patient follow-up visits, and brought the topic of “fertility preservation” to the forefront again.

Dr. Luo Weiwei of Guangxi Reproductive Hospital recently dialed a couple’s phone number during a regular follow-up visit, and a joyful response and the sound of a baby crying came from the other end of the line, Punch News reported. Luo Weiwei was delighted, “It looks like there is good news”. Sure enough, the wife, Ms. Huang, had given birth to a big, fat baby a few months ago.

The couple’s journey to find a child was not a smooth one. Ms. Huang and her wife, who are from Guangxi and work abroad, had been married for many years without being able to conceive, and had done in vitro fertilization three times before without success. Ten years ago, Ms. Huang, then 33 years old, went to Guangxi Reproductive Hospital for help, and the examination found that Ms. Huang had the problem of hydrosalpinx.

According to the report, experts at Guangxi Reproductive Hospital judged that the problem of hydrosalpinx must be solved and recommended removal of the fallopian tubes. In 2010, two embryos were transferred into Ms. Huang, one of which “took root” successfully and Ms. Huang gave birth to a baby boy at full term.

On the day of the transfer, the doctor recommended that the remaining two embryos be frozen and preserved. Ms. Huang said she had no intention of having another one, but two embryos are two lives after all.

In May 2019, 42-year-old Ms. Huang visited Guangxi Reproductive Hospital again. As their son grew up, the couple moved to have another one. However, with age in front of them, women over 40 years old are past the best time to have children; with the mindset of giving it a try, Ms. Huang once again came to seek help.

According to the newspaper, after examination, the doctor found that Ms. Huang had no eggs and had stopped menstruating for several months. As a result, two embryos that had been sleeping for nearly a decade were thawed. Ms. Huang took oral estrogen and progestin to restore the thickness of her uterine lining and the embryos could be transferred into her body. The embryos were successfully implanted, and before the formation of the placenta, the specialist continued to maintain the nutrition required by the fetus through medication regulation, and then the placenta “took over” the responsibility of providing nutrition after it was formed.

A few months ago, Ms. Huang gave birth to a healthy three-kilogram baby boy; this little baby was “created” at the same time as his brother, but came into the world ten years later. The couple laughingly said that the baby was “ten years old” at birth.
