President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris slammed law enforcement for what they said was a double standard in their treatment of congressional stormers and “peaceful” Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters. Double standards. Both comments sparked a public backlash.
On Wednesday (Jan. 6), violence broke out at the U.S. Capitol, leading to the suspension of an ongoing joint session. Police in Washington, D.C., said the riot resulted in four deaths and at least 68 arrests.
The next day, Biden and Hejinli addressed the nation. They both claimed that there was a marked difference between the way law enforcement handled the storming of Congress and the violent riots that occurred across the country after the “death of George Floyd” on May 25 of last year.
Biden called the “implementation of equal justice” a “clear failure. He said his granddaughter sent him a picture showing “military personnel in full armor” in front of the Lincoln Memorial “because of (the) Black Lives Matter protests.
Biden said, “No one can tell me if a group of Black Lives Matter protesters would have gotten the same treatment as the mob that stormed the Capitol yesterday. We all know that’s the case, and it’s unacceptable, totally unacceptable.”
He Jinli made the same argument in her subsequent remarks.
“We have witnessed two systems of justice: one that allowed extremists to storm the U.S. Capitol and the other that tear-gassed peaceful protesters last summer.” She said, “We know it’s unacceptable, and we know we can do better.”
Biden and Hejinli’s claims sparked a public backlash, with many criticizing them as the ones holding a double standard and lacking condemnation for the violence that occurred last year.
Alexandra DeSanctis, a contributor to the National Review, responded to Biden by saying, “Four people died yesterday after what happened. You know what? People died last summer, too. Countless businesses were destroyed, people’s livelihoods were burned and stolen, and you refuse to condemn this violence. What happened yesterday was horrible, but you’ve lost the right to preach.”
Conservative author A.G. Hamilton said, “This is complete nonsense, a ploy to manipulate the human psyche to make us forget what we witnessed every night last summer.”
Podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey responded to Hejinli by saying, “Oh my God, they really just know how to make everything so bad. It’s untrue, it’s divisive race baiting, but there’s absolutely no way the media will expose her lies. This is the same woman who tweeted about setting up a bail fund for the mob that burned down Minneapolis (where Floyd’s death occurred).”
Julio Rosas, a reporter for Townhall.com, also said, “As someone who has covered a lot of the riots in the last year, I can say that (Hejinli’s) claim is simply false. Tear gas, pepper balls, pepper spray and flashbangs were all used yesterday, just like they did with the rioters in 2020.”
Kelsey Bolar, a contributor to The Federalist, wrote, “All summer, law enforcement has let protesters set up ‘Capitol Hill Boroughs’ (CHOP), and yesterday, an unarmed woman was (shot) to death.”
