On the night of Jan. 7, there were sudden power outages in many districts in Shanghai. A large number of netizens said “minus 7 degrees, power outage”, “can’t stand”, “almost freezing to death” and so on.

According to the relevant person in charge of the State Grid Shanghai Electric Power, as of 21:00 on the evening of the 7th, the highest electricity load in Shanghai grid was 33.39 million kilowatts, breaking the record of 33.11 million kilowatts set in the summer of 2020 peak electricity consumption, a new record high load. However, affected by the cold weather, heating equipment for a short time concentrated use, resulting in a steep increase in electricity load in some areas, involving more low-voltage repair tasks in residential areas, the city’s 173 stationed more than 3,000 duty, repair personnel are repairing the fault points.

Another relevant industry insiders speculate that the cause of the outage may be part of the distribution network failure and internal user failure.
