Britain’s Daily Mail said on January 7 that eight Republican senators and 138 House members, branded as ‘treasonous preppers’ and facing expulsion for still opposing Biden’s victory after the riots at the Capitol.
Lawmakers Challenging Biden’s Electoral Votes Face Democratic Expulsion
The eight senators who opposed certification were Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Josh Hawley (R-Texas), Rick Scott (R-Texas), Tommy Tuberville (R-Texas), Roger Marshall (R-Texas), John Kennedy (D-Mass.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Texas) and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Texas).
Other members of Congress who participated in the opposition to certification were, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Matt Gaetz (R-Mich.), Louie Gohmert (D-N.Y.), Paul Gosar (D-N.Y.), Jim Jordan (D-N.Y.), freshly sworn-in Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), former Trump internist and chief medical advisor Tommy Tuberville (R-TX) and Anonymous Q (QAnon) conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-TX).
Newly elected Rep. Cori Bush (R-Texas) has called for the expulsion of those lawmakers, as well as others who “incite domestic terrorist attacks by overturning elections. Rep. Bush was one of the lawmakers who withdrew from the House on Wednesday and is a member of the administration’s investigative body, the House Judiciary Committee.
Cruz to lead battle to reject swing state’s electoral votes
Shortly after the riots broke out, Cruz’s team sent out a fundraising appeal via text message to those on his list. The Texas senator wrote in a tweet, “Unless there is an emergency review of election results, I will lead the battle to reject electoral votes in swing states.” He added, “Will you stand with me?” Attached is a link to donations.
Joint session against certifying swing state electoral votes
The rule for congressional challenges to election results is that challenges to state results are considered only if at least one senator and one representative oppose the results. Georgia Representative Jody Hice (D) opposed the Georgia results, but no senators did, and outgoing Joe Senator Kelly Loeffler (D), who had previously said she would challenge her state’s results, changed her mind after the chaos at the Capitol.
Rep. Greene opposed Michigan’s electoral votes, but no senators joined him in opposition. Rep. Mo Brooks (R) of Alabama opposed the Nevada vote, and Greene joined his challenge.
Democrats and some Republicans cheered when Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the certification, announced there would be no consideration of the results in Georgia, Michigan or Nevada. Just before 4:00 a.m., Congress officially certified Biden’s electoral votes.
