Many tech companies build new campuses on abandoned office space or other similar areas, but Epic Games is trying something – different. Eurogamer reports that the Fortnite developer is taking control of a hometown shopping center, the Cary Towne Center, and transforming it into the company’s s next headquarters by 2024. The new project will combine offices with “entertainment space” and will be built to handle the gaming giant’s “long-term growth. “
Epic said the project is still in its early stages, with no design work to show, but it is looking for ways to share the land with the neighborhood. Development should begin in 2021, and the company will continue operations at its Crossroads Boulevard office until a new headquarters is ready.
It’s not surprising that the shopping center’s owners are willing to strike a deal. Like many large shopping centers, Cary Town Center in Cary, N.C., struggled before the pandemic, and as sales moved online, retailers either succumbed or went out of business.
In an era when casual browsing poses a health risk, the situation is only getting worse. With that in mind, Epic’s move is a sign of the times – a company that made its fortune on software, and the Internet is about to replace a retail complex on the brink of bankruptcy.
