According to the Ministry of National Defense, from January to the end of December 2020, about 380 Chinese military aircraft have infiltrated Taiwan’s southwest ADIZ, which is the most heavily infested airspace compared to the past.

According to the Central News Agency, the U.S. State Department announced on the evening of the 5th through a rare public itinerary that Assistant Secretary Clarke Cooper of the State Department’s Bureau of Military Affairs will attend the U.S.-Taiwan “Political and Military Dialogue” via video message at 6:30 p.m. EST on the 6th (7:30 a.m. Taiwan time) and will deliver a talk at the meeting.

It is understood that Taiwan will have officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense to participate, and both sides are expected to exchange views on the regional situation, Taiwan-US military cooperation and arms sales.

This is not the first time that the U.S. and Taiwan have held a political-military dialogue. in August 2019, Cooper tweeted a photo of his meeting with then Representative to the U.S. Ko Suk-tai and emphasized his commitment to the U.S.-Taiwan political-military dialogue to promote peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.

In an interview on the matter, Cooper admitted at the time that Taiwan and the U.S. do have relevant dialogues on current and future postures, but he would not disclose further details.

Since taking over as Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs in May 2019, Cooper has repeatedly and publicly criticized the communist forces for their actions in disturbing Taiwan, and also praised Taiwan as a model of democracy and a reliable partner for cross-strait and regional peace and stability in a tweet when President Tsai Ing-wen was inaugurated in May last year.

In the future, Taiwan will continue to build on the existing solid and sound foundation and maintain close communication and deepen exchanges with the U.S. on various cooperation issues.
