Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted about China, Russia and the Arctic Circle, explaining that U.S. relations with Iceland, the Arctic and other regions are warmer than ever, and mentioning that the threat from Russia and Communist China must be a concern if countries near the Arctic Circle want to prosper. On the topic of the Arctic Circle, Pompeo sent 10 tweets in a row, clearly very concerned about it.
Pompeo also attached a tweet to a speech he gave in May 2019, saying that the United States is an Arctic nation and must pay more attention to the Arctic.
Secretary of State Pompeo pointed out to the outside world as early as last July that the U.S. would become more actively involved in the Arctic to counter Russia’s growing influence and to thwart the ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party, not for the first time, which wants to reach out to the Arctic. Pompeo wrote in the posting: “I have made it very clear that it is a communist fantasy for China to become a Near-Arctic nation when it is 900 miles from the North Pole. This pangolin’s nose has been in the Arctic tent for too long – we did what we had to do by evoking simple reality. and included a picture of China 900 miles (about 1,448 kilometers) from the Arctic Circle”.
Finally, Pompeo concluded his posting with a shout-out to Americans: “Americans are safer because we’re holding joint military exercises in the Arctic, strengthening our military deployments, rebuilding our fleet of icebreakers, expanding U.S. Coast Guard funding, and creating a new Arctic coordinator position at the State Department.
