Outbreak heats up in Tokyo, first cluster of 45 people infected in high school

A total of 45 people, including 41 students, have been diagnosed at a metropolitan high school in Tokyo, and classes have been temporarily suspended. This is the first time a cluster of infections has occurred in a Tokyo metropolitan school.

NHK reported that the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education said that between December 26 last year and January 3 this year, 41 students and 4 staff members from the first to third grades at a Tokyo metropolitan high school were diagnosed with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

Among the students diagnosed, 37 belong to two sports clubs, and one of the sports clubs, which had been traveling since December 26 last year to participate in a competition not held in Tokyo, cancelled its participation after learning that a member of the team had been diagnosed.

The high school has temporarily suspended classes from the 4th to the 8th, and club activities have been completely suspended. The public health center (health clinic) has been notified that Quant is a close contact for examination.
