UK reopens temporary hospital built at start of new coronavirus outbreak to fight spread of new variant of new coronavirus

health workers are ready to reactivate the Nightingale temporary hospital in the London area if necessary, a spokeswoman for the NHS said on Jan. 1. The British military established the Nightingale temporary hospital around London at the beginning of the new coronavirus outbreak and has been on standby since.

There were 53,285 new cases of the new coronavirus in the U.K. on Friday, slightly lower than the 55,892 cases a day earlier. It was also the fourth day in a row that new infections of the new coronavirus in the U.K. topped the 50,000 mark, with daily new cases nearly doubling from a few weeks ago.

British health officials said the rise in new cases was triggered by the more contagious new variant of the New Coronavirus, leading the U.K. to restart closure measures. Media reports say the new coronavirus, first identified in the United Kingdom, has now appeared in 33 countries, and more than 40 countries have banned British travelers from entering the country.

Turkey on Friday became another country to ban British travelers from entering the country. The Turkish government said it has identified 15 cases of the new coronavirus, all of which have involved travelers who recently arrived from the United Kingdom.

New coronavirus has also been found in the U.S. state of Florida. The Philippines has said it is banning travelers from the United States until Jan. 15.
