The former member of the Hong Kong House of Representatives, Chow Ting, who was sentenced to 10 months in prison for the siege of the police headquarters on June 21 last year, has been imprisoned in the low to medium security Lo Wu Correctional Institution, Hong Kong’s Apple Daily quoted news on Thursday (31) that Chow Ting had been “upgraded” to a Category A prisoner (Cat A) and transferred to the high security Tai Lam Correctional Institution to continue serving his sentence. The report said that the prisoner has been “upgraded” to Category A (Cat A) and transferred to the high-security Tai Lam Correctional Institution to continue serving his sentence.
Former legislator Shao Jiazhen, who has been concerned about prisoner rights, said that the classification of prisoners is usually linked to the length of sentence and the crime, and that Category A prisoners are generally guilty of murder, drug trafficking and other serious crimes. He said Zhou Ting’s sentence was only 10 months, but he was still classified as a “Class A” prisoner, which is unclear.
He said Class A inmates are placed in solitary confinement and under “intensive care” and are accompanied by two correctional officers when they walk anywhere in the prison.
In a recent video released by Chow Ting’s video channel, Southern District Councilor Yuen Ka Wai was seen visiting the prison on Christmas Day with books, picture books, feminine products and other items. Chow Ting said that she felt very cold in the prison and needed to wear seven shirts to keep warm. She also shared that she could enroll in cake classes at the prison and was assigned to the laundry room.
