Far beyond the original notification Russian Statistics Agency: more than 186,000 deaths from the epidemic

Russia announced today that more than 186,000 people have died from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across the country so far, much higher than the originally announced figure.

The Russian Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat) said the number of deaths from all causes recorded from January to November this year increased by 229,700 compared to the previous year, 81 percent of which were caused by coronavirus 2019, translating into 186,057 deaths.

However, Russian health officials have so far reported only 55,265 deaths, a death rate much lower than in other countries with serious outbreaks. The number of confirmed cases reported is over 3 million, the fourth highest in the world.

According to figures released by the Russian Federal Statistical Service, Russia ranks third in the world in terms of total deaths, behind the United States with 333,140 cases and Brazil with 191,139 cases.
