UK: Urges China to release all those detained for media coverage of activities

Zhang Zhan, who was sentenced to four years in prison today, is just one of at least 47 journalists arrested in China at the moment, the British Embassy in Beijing said via Twitter on Dec. 28. The British Embassy said, “The whereabouts of other citizen journalists remain unknown, including Chen Qiushi and Fang Bin, and we urge the Chinese side to release all those detained for their media reporting activities.”

The British Embassy in Beijing wrote, “Zhang Zhan was arrested earlier this year for his reporting on the Wuhan New Crown virus and was also sentenced to four years in prison at a court hearing today. The issue of media freedom in China involved in this case raises serious concerns. A British diplomat tried to sit in on his trial but was denied access.”

The tweet added, “Zhang Zhan is just one of at least 47 journalists arrested in China at this time. The whereabouts of other citizen journalists remain unknown, including Chen Qiushi and Fang Bin. We urge the Chinese side to release all those detained for their media reporting activities.” The BBC, the Guardian, the Financial Times and other British media also reported on the case of Zhang Zhan on Monday with concern.
