Japan’s new ambassador to China, Hideo Chui, recently said in an interview that many Japanese people have a bad impression of China and hope that China will “study it well”.
In an interview with the Punch News, Hideo was asked how he saw the contrast in the favorability of the Chinese and Japanese people towards each other, saying that the number of Chinese people who have a “good” impression of Japan is increasing, while there are many Japanese people who have a “bad” impression of China. “In terms of Japanese people’s feelings towards China, I hope the Chinese side will study the reasons for this situation and how to reverse it.”
He also expressed his willingness to ponder with the Chinese side, and will do his best to assist in the Chinese side’s efforts.
Hideo Chui, 59, was appointed as the new ambassador to China in September this year. Hideo Chui joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 1985 and served as Japan’s Minister to China and Director of the Consular Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before becoming the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ Chief of Staff in 2019.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said last month that China will actively consider joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Some experts believe that the CPTPP entry threshold is too high and there are many obstacles for China to join.
According to Hideo Chui, Japan will further observe whether China is ready to meet its higher requirements.
In addition, he stressed in the interview the importance of establishing stable Japan-China relations, adding, “It is true that there are still some outstanding issues between Japan and China, but as Japan, China and South Korea, which play a huge role in the world economy and pull the locomotive of prosperity in East Asia, should continue to promote practical cooperation with the purpose of working together to solve a variety of issues in the international community. “
